Wisdom from Above

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. ¹⁵This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. ¹⁷But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. ¹⁸And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Main Points

Wisdom isn't what you say — it's how you live; real wisdom shows up as meekness in conduct.

The question is designed to make men examine their claims to wisdom — not to shame but to reorient.

"By his good conduct" — wisdom is behavioral, not just intellectual.

"Meekness of wisdom" — meekness (praus) is power under authority, strength under control; the war horse, not the timid man.

The combination of meekness and wisdom = power under control through Christ.

The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.

Jesus challenges the crowd about who is without sin before condemning the woman — wisdom shown in restraint.

Is my life actually demonstrating wisdom, or am I more confident in my knowledge than in my conduct?

Am I walking in humility or in subtle pride — including the pride of thinking I'm not prideful?

If the men around me looked at my life and my conduct, would they see wisdom?

Wisdom is not what you say — it's how you live. Identify one area of your conduct this week where wisdom needs to show up in action, not in words.

James doesn't say these men lack wisdom — he says their wisdom is sourced from somewhere specific: below, not above.

Earthly: operates from a this-world-only frame, with no eternal orientation.

Unspiritual: literally "soulish" — driven by human nature rather than the Spirit.

Demonic: this is the sharpest category; this wisdom is energized by the same source as demonic activity.

"Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder" — the fruit is diagnostic; if there's chaos, look for these roots.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.

Is there bitter jealousy present in my heart toward anyone — genuine inability to celebrate what God is doing for them?

Am I driven by selfish ambition — doing things that look good but are really about my image, my advancement, my gain?

Do the outcomes of my attitudes and actions tend toward order or disorder in the people around me?

Corrupt motives produce corrupt outcomes. Identify one motive that's earthly or selfish right now and bring it before God. Uproot jealousy. Kill selfish ambition. If I don't surrender it, it will destroy what's around me.

"First pure" — the ordering is intentional; peace built on impurity is false peace.

Peaceable: produces peace rather than conflict as its default output.

Gentle: not passive, but non-coercive; strength exercised with care.

Open to reason: not rigid or defensive; willing to be corrected and consider other perspectives.

Full of mercy and good fruits: the abundance of mercy is visible in concrete outcomes.

Impartial: no partiality, consistent with James's teaching in chapter 2.

Sincere: without hypocrisy; what you see is what you get.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God — purity is the precondition for the clearest sight of God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God — James draws on the same teaching.

Are these qualities growing in my life, or am I essentially the same man I was a year ago?

Am I known more for peace or for conflict — and do I even know honestly which it is?

When people encounter me — at work, at home, in traffic — do they experience even one of these qualities?

God's wisdom transforms character. Pursue purity as the foundation this week — not as a checklist but as a posture before God. When purity is settled, peace follows.

"Sown in peace" — the method of sowing is as important as what is sown; peace is how righteousness is planted.

"Those who make peace" — active, not passive; peacemaking is a choice and a discipline.

A harvest is future-oriented — what you plant now grows into something later.

The peacemaker's legacy isn't just resolved conflict; it's a harvest of righteousness in others.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Paul calls believers to put away all bitterness and anger, to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave.

²⁵Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. ²⁶Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷and give no opportunity to the devil. ²⁸Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. ²⁹Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. ³⁰And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. ³¹Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. ³²Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Am I sowing peace or sowing conflict in the relationships around me?

What kind of harvest is my life currently producing in the people closest to me?

Am I actively pursuing peace, or am I more often the reason peace is difficult?

What you plant today determines what grows tomorrow. Identify one relationship where you have been sowing conflict or tension and plant one act of peace this week — a conversation, a word, an action that moves toward restoration.

My Wisdom Will Expose Whether I Create Chaos or Walk in Humility

I feed jealousy and call it passion, or I uproot it and choose to celebrate what God is doing for others.

I operate from selfish ambition and call it drive, or I kill the motive and pursue the kingdom's gain.

I create disorder wherever I go and blame the people around me, or I take responsibility for what I'm bringing into the room.

I chase the world's version of wisdom — status, image, accumulation — or I pursue what is pure, peaceable, and from above.

I sow conflict and reap division, or I make peace and invest in a harvest of righteousness.

I claim to be wise while my life demonstrates something earthly, or I let my conduct show what source I'm drawing from.

Closing Thoughts

Help me refine every spark of insight and conviction into a singular, solid truth before I move.

Is the wisdom I'm operating from right now producing peace and righteousness in the people around me — or disorder and every vile practice? The fruit doesn't lie.

Identify one area where jealousy or selfish ambition has been driving me. Bring it to God. Surrender it specifically. Ask Him to replace it with something from above.

Tell one person close to me what kind of wisdom is currently running my decision-making — is it producing order or disorder around me? Be honest. Ask him to pray with me.

I am an ambassador for Christ. Be reconciled to God and do not bear false witness to the Kingdom of God. (2 Corinthians 5:20, Exodus 20:16, Matthew 19:18, Proverbs 24:28) - I must not let my testimony be questioned by something as easy as Taming my Tongue.
