The Coming Glory of the Temple

2:1 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: ²“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, ³‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? ⁴Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, ⁵according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. ⁶For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. ⁷And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. ⁸The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. ⁹The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’”

Main Points

God speaks again to the leaders and the remnant rebuilding the temple.
He confronts the discouragement of men comparing their work to past glory.

The Coming Glory of the Temple

The date is exact, seventh month, twenty-first day, roughly a month after the work resumed (Hag 1:14-15).

Same three recipients every time: governor, priest, remnant, leadership and laity both get addressed, no one is exempt.

Speak now signals urgency, God is not waiting around while men sit in discouragement.

Same season, same leaders, same theme ÔÇö the work succeeds by God's enablement, not human strength.

Confirms this word was actively driving the construction forward in real time.

Rebuilding Begins Anew

5:1 Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them. ²Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.

When God's word comes to my leaders and to me, am I treating it as urgent or as background noise?

Do I assume spiritual leadership is exempt from needing a word of correction or strength?

Am I willing to be addressed publicly and directly, or do I prefer my faith stay private and comfortable?

I will read whatever instruction my pastor or group leader gave me most recently and act on it today, not next week.

Three rapid-fire questions, God presses the wound instead of avoiding it.

As nothing in your eyes, the issue is not reality, it is perception. Their eyes are measuring wrong.

He does not rebuke them for noticing the difference, He rebukes the conclusion they are drawing from it.

Direct historical match ÔÇö this grief was real and documented.

¹²But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy,

Same era, same problem ÔÇö God addressing the temptation to despise a small, unimpressive beginning.

¹⁰For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

“These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth.”

Where am I measuring my current obedience against someone else's past glory and calling myself nothing?

Have I let discouragement convince me God is not in the small, unimpressive thing I am building?

Am I more attached to how things look than to what God is actually doing?

I will name one area where I have quietly written off my progress as nothing and bring it to my group Friday instead of carrying it alone.

⁴Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, ⁵according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.

Be strong repeated three times, once for each group. No one gets to opt out.

Work is the command, not feel better or wait it out. The remedy for discouragement is obedience, not emotion management.

The basis is not their ability, it is I am with you. The covenant and the Spirit are the foundation, not their feelings.

Same command pattern ÔÇö strength rooted in God's presence, not human resolve.

The covenant promise Haggai is invoking ÔÇö God's presence has always been the engine behind obedience.

⁴⁵I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. ⁴⁶And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.

When I am discouraged, do I wait to feel strong before I act, or does God call me to work first?

Am I leaning on my own resolve to push through, or on the reality that God is actually with me?

Is fear not something I actually believe, or just a phrase I quote?

I will pick the task I have been putting off because I do not feel ready and start it today ù strength follows obedience, not the other way around.

⁶For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. ⁷And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.

Once more implies a previous shaking (Sinai), this is a pattern, not a one-off event.

The shaking is not random destruction, it has a purpose: treasure comes in, glory fills the house.

The scope is total, heavens, earth, sea, dry land, all nations. Nothing is exempt from God's sovereign hand.

New Testament confirms this shaking points toward an unshakable, eternal kingdom.

²⁶At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” ²⁷This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

Same prophetic theme ÔÇö the nations' wealth ultimately serving God's glory and His people.

Do I actually believe God is sovereign over nations and history, or does that feel abstract to me?

When my world gets shaken, do I trust there is a purpose, or do I just brace for impact?

Am I storing up treasure for God's glory, or hoarding it for myself?

I will identify one area of my life that is currently being shaken and write down, specifically, how I believe God could use it for His glory.

⁸The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. ⁹The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’”

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, direct answer to any anxiety about resources or comparison to Solomon's gold-laden temple.

Latter glory greater than the former, a flat reversal of their discouragement in v.3.

I will give peace, the final word is not about gold, it is about peace given directly by God.

Same theme ÔÇö God owns everything, so resource scarcity is never the real constraint.

¹⁰  For every beast of the forest is mine,
    the cattle on a thousand hills.
¹¹  I know all the birds of the hills,
    and all that moves in the field is mine.
¹²  “If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
    for the world and its fullness are mine.

— PSALM 50:10–12

Ultimate fulfillment ÔÇö Christ entering this very temple is what makes the latter glory greater than the former.

Do I trust that God owns the resources for whatever He has called me to, or do I let scarcity talk me out of obedience?

Can I believe that what looks small now could end up greater than what came before?

Am I chasing peace from circumstances, or receiving it as something God gives?

I will stop calculating whether I have enough to obey in the area God is pressing on me and take the next step today, letting Him handle the resourcing.

From Nothing to Glory

I compare what God is doing in me now to someone else's past and call it nothing.

I wait to feel strong before I obey instead of obeying first.

I let discouragement slow down work God has already commanded.

I forget that God owns the resources for what He has called me to do.

I treat present hardship as proof God is not working instead of as the shaking before glory.

I chase peace from my circumstances instead of receiving it from God.

Help me refine every spark of insight and conviction into a singular, solid truth before I move.

What is one thing I have quietly written off as nothing that God has called me to be strong and work on anyway?

Confront one area where I have let comparison or scarcity stall my obedience, bring it to God in prayer and name it as sin, not just discouragement.

Tell someone I am close to what I am rebuilding and ask them to hold me to working on it before next Friday.

Prayer

First step is always prayer. I can not do this on my own. LORD, my GOD…Lead the way.

Heavenly Father,

I thank you for choosing me to build something for Your glory. Help me renew my mind and know that it is not I that is building it in the first place, but You through me. All things You touch is good. So, let me go forth with building things and not compare it to what once was, or what someone else is building but instead with the wisdom and knowledge that You will do great things through me in your honor. I thank you for the reminder that you own everything. I thank you for the reminder that I just need to get out of my own way, and let you do the work you've already completed.
